What is Psychotherapy and How Can It Help?
Psychotherapy can help guide you to uncover various emotional and mental difficulties, and provide tools for working through these issues so that you can heal, improve daily functioning, and be more fully you.
Psychotherapy can help treat issues such as difficulty coping with daily life, trauma, medical illness, death of a loved one, and specific mental disorders such as depression or anxiety. Therapists will utilize different types of evidenced-based psychotherapy modalities, such as Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Family Systems, EMDR, and so on.
And some types may work better depending on the individual and types of issues. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.
Therapy can be conducted in an individual, family, couple, or group setting, and is appropriate for children and adults. Sessions are typically held once a week (50 minutes) and involve the work of both the patient and therapist. The trust and relationship that is built between you and your therapist are essential to working together effectively.
Depending on individual needs, psychotherapy can be short-term (a few sessions), dealing with immediate issues, or long-term (months to years), dealing with longstanding and complex issues. The goals of treatment and arrangements for how often and how long to meet are planned jointly by the patient and therapist.
Do You Provide Psychological Testing?
What is Psychiatry and Why Might I Need It?
Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. This type of treatment focuses on the physical and biological needs of our patients.
Psychiatric services are provided by physicians (MD, DO) and Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP). Psychiatrists and nurse practitioners can order or perform a full range of medical laboratory and psychological tests. They are trained and equipped to understand the complex relationship between emotional and other medical illnesses, as well as genetics and family history. Using this information, these professionals evaluate and make medical diagnoses, and to work with patients to develop treatment plans.
Medications are used by prescribers in much the same way that a primary care physician uses medications to treat high blood pressure or diabetes. After completing thorough evaluations, psychiatrists and nurse practitioners can prescribe medications to help treat mental disorders. Medications may beneficially modulate chemical signaling and communication within the brain, which may reduce some symptoms of psychiatric disorders. Patients on long-term medication treatment will need to meet with their providers periodically to monitor the effectiveness of the medication and any potential side effects.
Psychiatric medication treatment is usually more effective when integrating psychotherapy. Medication can help treat the symptoms you have, while psychotherapy works to help you heal the underlying causes of your distress.
What Does Integrating Mental Health and Christian Faith Look Like?
Understanding mental health struggles on a spiritual level is important as we seek to answer questions about why there is suffering, both personally and in the world, and how a relationship with God brings healing, hope, and freedom to be who we truly are. We will work to address questions such as, “if God loves me, why does he allow me to suffer?”, and “what does Jesus have to do with what I’m going through now?”
Fully Health is rooted in the Gospel. We believe that all the pain and suffering we experience in life are a result of the broken nature of the world we live in, and that we are all affected by this condition. Satan (the devil) also continues to attack our mind and body, wreaking havoc on our thought processes that result in pain and suffering. Because of humanity’s severed relationship with God, we experience physical and spiritual death on earth. But it doesn’t end there.
God reaches down to us through Jesus Christ, who lived among humanity and demonstrated His unconditional love to restore this relationship. He did that by putting himself through immense suffering including his own death. But we have real hope because of his resurrection, which is the power that restores and heals us. Because of this, there is no one who is better able to relate with all of us who experience pain and suffering. Accepting this truth by faith begins to free us to be who we were created to be and gives us true stability and security despite our life circumstances.
We also provide cost-free group meetings run by our pastoral staff that are recommended for our clients to attend. Please note, these groups are open to the public and you do not need to be a client of Fully Health to participate. Click here to sign up.
